I did a thing! I have done many things in my life, but I am particularly proud of THIS THING! I wrote a book…
I wrote a book, Y’all!
Not only that… I wrote a book and I’m going to publish it. It’s a picture book, aimed at the 3-7-year-old range, and it is starting to be illustrated TODAY! The fabulous Sarah-Leigh Wills starts drawing today! I cannot hold in my excitement any longer so I thought now was a good time to share the excitement with you! Here’s the really neato thing that will hopefully excite you- IT’S ABOUT INFERTILITY!!!
As I said in my previous post, becoming a parent has been a really intense thing for me. For so long I wondered if it would ever happen. Then it felt too painful, too all encompassing, too hard and I was scared I wasn’t doing it right… and then as all that settled down, and I really started to own my journey to parenthood, I started to think about how to convey that message to my son.
How will I explain to him his amazing, miraculous, scientific conception? I want him to know that he is an IVF baby. I want him to have that as part of his birth story from his youngest memories. I want to present it as fact, as how some babies come to be, as not weird or other. But as wonderful. As EXTRA!
So that’s what I set out to do! I wrote a picture book that ties the scientific facts of life (sperm and egg make a baby) with the extra things that it sometimes takes to make that baby a reality (gamete donation, adoption, surrogacy and, of course, IVF). All wrapped up in an adorable story-line that leads the family to discover what it truly means to be “Extra”!
That’s the name of the book. Extra!
It will be published this November. EEEEK! This has been 2 years of my life of hard diligent work. I can’t believe it’s finally about to be a reality! I’ll keep you all updated as we progress on the blog. I will certainly let you know when it is available for purchase!!
